A Live Case Study
Watch an award-winning novelist write her next book in six weeks — while working a full-time job, travelling, and living a busy life.
The writing begins July 6, 2026
Two published novels. One repeatable process.
Writer-in-Residence — 2026 NGIBA winner
On June 26, I am flying to the USA to accept three awards from the Next Generation Indie Book Awards for my first novel. I won Grand Prize 3rd Place for Fiction, General Fiction over 100k words, and tied the win for Regional Fiction! Plus received a finalist nod for First Novel over 90k words.
That winning book was written in six weeks using the exact process I used to finish my second novel, and what I am about to use again for my third novel — a process akin to one I developed writing technical and engineering reports over the past three decades. I’m going to write it while working my full-time day job. While travelling overseas. While juggling a life that doesn’t stop just because a deadline is looming.
And now I am doing it again.
In public. In real time. With you watching.
An Invitation
A minute with me, before you decide.
Who I Am & Why I Write
I’m Jenny (J.A.) Hoskins. I write because stories are in my soul. After five decades of jotting down half-finished chapters and scribbled paragraphs on random notepads, and never putting my creative work out into the world, it felt like my soul was starting to wither. So I don’t just want to write — I need to write. I don’t just enjoy it — I love it. I love the feeling of a story flowing through me. My imagination whirling like a tornado of stars, leaving gold dust behind on the page.
I’m also a busy full-time engineer with 28 years of technical work under my belt. I have a demanding career, a full life, and a creative fire that refuses to politely wait.
This is what managing all that actually looks like.
Ailsa Craig — proposed cover.
The cover’s almost ready. The manuscript isn’t.
The Book
On July 6, I start writing my next novel. It’s historical fiction rooted in a real woman’s story — a story I stumbled across going down an ancestry rabbit hole that I genuinely have not been able to stop thinking about.
The book is already listed on Amazon with a September 9, 2026 release date — so I’m committed!
The first draft is due IN FULL to my editor August 17 — but to be fair, she’s agreed to receive it in bits and pieces so we can meet that publication deadline.
I have scattered notes, a half-baked outline, an ever-expanding family tree to chase for research, and a premise that keeps me awake at night.
But I haven’t written a single word of the actual manuscript yet.
This is not my usual genre. My other two novels are contemporary literary fiction focused on women’s reinvention. This one is historical fiction based on a true story, and that is a complete curveball for me. I am somewhat confined by the facts, but also liberated by the fiction fallback.
The stakes are higher. The research is deeper. The pressure is real.
And you get to watch the entire thing unfold.
A real person. A real book.
Real pressure.
What You Get
You will hear from me three times a week over the full six weeks — somewhere around 18–20 dispatches in all, starting July 6. I'll provide real progress reports, and insights into how the process is working.
Some weeks the emails will arrive exactly on schedule. Some weeks life will intervene, because that is the whole point of doing this live. This invitation has no polished content calendar.
It's a real person writing a real book under real pressure using a real process. Not perfection. Just progress.
You’ll see behind the scenes of how I wrote my award-winning novel using a process adapted from nearly three decades of engineering work. The process will be implemented in real time.
How I organize ‘the write’ in Week 1, so I am not starting from chaos. How I make creative decisions under pressure when the facts don’t support what the fiction wants to say. What I do when I get stuck — unfiltered and in the moment.
Real word counts. Real sessions. Real progress tracked transparently.
You’ll see me juggle this while travelling overseas (after the awards), working from away, and still hitting my daily writing targets. My goal once I actually start writing is an average of 5000 words per day. Sustained at 85 words per minute, that’s only about an hour of writing. Realistically it takes more like 2 to 3 hours because some days the words flow like magic, and other days, it’s like panning for gold in a dry creek.
I follow a write forward principle. I keep moving, even if I can’t find the right words. I never stop to edit. I trust the process — because I know it works.
You’re invited to follow along and watch — or to write your own book at the same time if you want. But there are no tasks. No templates. No assignments. No pressure. Just the option to apply what you are seeing to your own work.
My final email will include an exclusive priority-access invitation to my live writing workshops and private coaching when they open later this year.
This Is Not a Course
This is not a course.
This is not a how-to guide.
This is a live case study.
Proof that the process works. Proof that you can write a novel while working full time and navigating a busy life. Proof that deadlines and constraints don’t have to kill creativity.
You’ll be watching an award-winning novelist challenge herself with a new genre, a looming deadline, and a full life that doesn’t pause for the sake of art.
You’ll be with me through the mental and emotional realities of creative work under pressure. You’ll be getting the unfiltered truth about what it takes to finish.
Who This Is For

All welcome.

Doors close July 5. Once I start writing on July 6, I’m just writing — no stopping.
